In this course I would like to show you how not to be too serious in recreating actual real life flowers. You will learn how to make a minimalistic yet bold paper poppy with beehive centre using three types of crepe paper including metallic one. I hope to teach you some new techniques that will inspire you to further experiments.

Imagine standing in a meadow where right before your eyes all the flowers are starting to oversize, smoothly going up, growing long stems, blooming even further, petals getting big and colours intensifying. You know them all, but now, oversized and so much closer, you can see all the details, colours, smells that you have never noticed before. Surreal isn’t it? That is how my imagination works when creating any unusual yet familiar flowers. Blooms on steroids if you like! But also, surrealism is a form of escapism, dealing with situations you have no control over. In line with “if we don’t laugh we'll cry”, being not serious helps to deal with the current weird and tense world. 

Beehive Poppy takes its name from the intricate centre that reminds the bee hive with its modular shape, whereas poppy is a common wild flower in both of the countries that have shaped me as a person and an artist, Poland - where I have been born and raised, and England that has become my home over a decade ago. They are an important part of these two rural ecosystems, helping pollinators to thrive, but also they are widely used in folk culture and celebrations in both nations.

I hope to inspire you to be playful with your floral art, to try new things and combinations of materials you already know and use, to unleash your imagination. We will be working with metallic crepe paper that can be challenging to use due to its smooth and shiny surface and we will dye petals with a little control to find joy in experimenting and working with unexpected results. You will finish the course with three poppies, all the same yet different.

Jasmina Gluszynski Artist Statement

I feel like I have always been creative, however my life led me in a bit of a different direction. After years of working in the marketing and events industry I found myself in the position where such a high-paced career has been almost impossible along with family life.

I have reconsidered my priorities and decided to change my path. This is how I rediscovered my creative side and since 2019 I have literally bloomed. I had a chance to learn from many prominent artists and paper florists and to develop my own style and techniques that I am now sharing with others.

I love getting my hands dirty of glue and colours while listening to music or podcasts. It’s my gateway to sanity, break from an everyday life, and a chance to enjoy therapeutic qualities of working with hands.

At the same time it is the everyday life, my surroundings, nature, people, art and various travels that inspire me and send me to my floral meadows of creativity.
